Kenji Matsudaira (松平 賢次, Matsudaira Kenji), nicknamed Mackenzie, is Koutarou’s best friend from school. Additionally, he works in the excavation site from episode 1. He enjoys taunting Koutarou, but often praises him for his gallant personality.

- The name Kenji means "wise" (賢) (ken) and "next" (次) (ji).
- Kenji's surname Matsudaira means "pine tree, fir tree" (松) (matsu) and "flat, broad, level, even, peaceful" (平) (taira/daira).
